Ok, this is another dumb question, but I just want to know what other people do...
Surfaces:
I moved into a new place where the floors are uneven. My coins go all over the place, roll, and usually end up hitting walls to stop. Anybody do theirs on a carpet?
Coins:
I used to have 3 2-euro coins I swore by... gave them up when I moved, and for some reason Turkish lira coins just don't fall the same. I like to use the biggest coins possible, seems to work better for me... anybody else have this hang-up?
What coins do you use?

Re: surfaces and coins
Fri, February 10, 2006 - 8:51 AMwhat do you mean by "they don't fall the same"?
I haven't used coins in years, I prefer cowrie shells or rice [it's a noise level while casting issue... ha ha ha], and i have cast on a carpet with no problem.
when you say "bigger coins seem to work better for me" what do you mean? -
-
Re: surfaces and coins
Fri, February 10, 2006 - 10:03 AMI mean, coins that are physically larger in size seem to work better than coins that are physically smaller in size.
I also like the noise. -
-
Re: surfaces and coins
Fri, February 10, 2006 - 10:57 AMif you are casting on a carpet i can see how larger coins would probably fall better [flat... as opposed to possibly being pitched sort of upright by the carpet's pile] that is what i'm trying to understand when you say they work better. it's not clear to me what you mean.
i believe that you should use whatever method enables you to create the proper frame of mind for consulting, because your mental state is more important than your method. so if the coins and the noise helps to clear your mind and make it receptive then by all means that is what you should do. our relationship to the I Ching should be a personal one.
my questions were not aimed to question your method. I'm just trying to understand what you mean when you say "work better" -

Re: surfaces and coins
Fri, February 10, 2006 - 11:11 AMI just mean, with some coins, the result is always right on.
With others, it's really hard to see how the result has anything to do with anything. -

Re: surfaces and coins
Fri, February 10, 2006 - 12:55 PMAn old friend of mine that introduced me to the iching cautioned me about the usage of the coins.....he said consistanty within your style is what is most important when casting. In otherwords if you prefer big coins, always use big coins. -

Re: surfaces and coins
Sat, February 11, 2006 - 9:58 AMi filled up book after book with coin casts in my twenties and thirties. Spiral notebooks with only hexagrams from start to finish, lots of them.
I've used the computer for 15 years or so, first a program on an Mac plus, that i bought when they first came out. ( more than 15 years i now reckon ) anyway, when i went over to windows i had some trouble finding one that worked (!) most seemed not to, even expensive ones with bells and whistles ( especially these maybe) Anyway, this is a link to the freeware program i've used for 6 or 7 years i guess. Works great.

Re: surfaces and coins
Sun, February 12, 2006 - 4:09 AM"Doesn't having a computer do it kind of take something out of it for you?"
Oh, no. Not for me. I think of computers as the ultimate in flat surfaces. I think it works much better, to tell the truth. If it works, it works, IMO. It's the dialogue with the Ching that's important, not the mechanics so much.
Computers are Tao as they can be, nothing but little Yang 1's and Yin 0's combining to make reality. The Ching, in the language i use with it, uses the hexagram #50, the cauldron, to indicate computers. The same hexagram that refers to the Ching itslelf. A transformative vessel that is a good product of civilization.
But people are different in this regard, and everyone has their own relationship and language with The Book. What i am thinking when i make a throw is of utmost importance to me. How i get the reading, not so important.
If i'm away from home and don't have a laptop, i use pennies. I know the hexagrams and lines well enough from long time heavy use that i usually don't reach for a translation, but instead remember what the line has meant to me before, and usualy remember various translations of the line. I have a strong personal dislike for ceremony anyway. -

Re: surfaces and coins
Mon, February 13, 2006 - 10:11 AMBeautiful explanation Wil!!!
When we really come to understand the manifestations of yin and yang around us we can divine without the aid of tools [coins, yarrow stalks, computers, etc.]. the hexagrams are identifying energy patterns that surround us on a daily basis, helping us to identify them. as our relationship with the I Ching grows we... become the book of changes that we already are. ;-) -

Re: surfaces and coins
Mon, February 13, 2006 - 7:02 PMPennies works for me, humble and available, as far as surfaces go I think about the time Kesey cast for the fate of the world and a coin balanced on its edge. Personally I like the play of the aether on the coin. -

Re: surfaces and coins
Mon, April 10, 2006 - 10:30 PMI have been trying different ones lately, because of this post. I don't like quarters I have decided.
I use the Chinese coins which seem best under all situations. But I also use some
Favorite nickles and also some of the *new* american dollar coins, for these I
always cast onto a kerchief// bandanna to cause the coins to roll less. It really works very well most times.

Re: surfaces and coins
Tue, April 11, 2006 - 9:12 AMfor 10+ yrs i used chinese coins and i have used pennies or quarters in a pinch. about three years ago i switched to the 16 bead method and have found that to give me better, more succinct, results than coins. -

Ah, HA. I knew you were hiding here somewhere. Please tell me how to do that
again.
I was not sure how many beads are removed for each line. I seem to
recall it was three and then one is eliminated to keep true to
the golden mean.

make what you take?
Tue, April 25, 2006 - 3:08 PMi use pennies because they're always lying around. i always use the first three i see as soon as i decide to do my reading. i cast the coins wherever i feel most relaxed and comfortable...outside...inside...on tables...floor...carpet...blankets.... i trust the universal truth would only be burdened by my attempt to personify and/or predict a "best" spot or "favorite" set of coins...though i may one day find myself in pattern. if it helps you to pick out coins which you think fall "better" or "worse" than i urge you to stick to any meathod which allows you to calm and quiet yourself to hear what the book is trying to tell you.
basically.....
do what you want :) and don't forget to relax
