I've been researching the star nations and terrestrial beings. i'm not sure where i stand on this issue. earlier today i consulted the iching for it's position on this matter. i asked to be guided in knowledge as to whether these beings / nations were here to help us or to hurt us. I would very much like to hear other's views & opinions on this matter.
this is the answer that I recieved:
64: 1,4,5. changes to 61. I follow the method of a teacher regarding the interpretation of multiple changing lines. We can talk about this if you like. So with 3 changing lines, I use the middle line, which is line 4. Line 4 reads as follows :
I've provided the interpretations from 2 different scholors . Wilhelm's and Legge
Wilhelm 64:4 Before Completion
Nine in the fourth place means:
Perseverance brings good fortune.
Remorse disappears.
Shock, thus to discipline the Devil's Country.
For three years, great realms are rewarded.
Now it is the time of struggle. The transition must be completed. We must
make ourselves strong in resolution; this brings good fortune. All
misgivings that might arise in such grave times of struggle must be silenced.
It is a question of a fierce battle to break and to discipline the Devil's
Country, the forces of decadence. But the struggle also has its reward. Now is
the time to lay the foundations of power and mastery for the future.
Legge
The fourth NINE, undivided, shows its subject by firm correctness obtaining good fortune, so that all occasion for repentance disappears. Let him stir himself up, as if he were invading the Demon region, where for three years rewards will come to him (and his troops) from the great kingdom.
______________
this hexagram changes to 61 inner truth:
Welhelm's
Wind stirs water by penetrating it. Thus the superior man, when obliged to
judge the mistakes of men, tries to penetrate their minds with understanding,
in order to gain a sympathetic appreciation of the circumstances. In ancient
China, the entire administration of justice was guided by this principle. A
deep understanding that knows how to pardon was considered the highest
form of justice. This system was not without success, for its aim was to make
so strong a moral impression that there was no reason to fear abuse of such
mildness. For it sprang not from weakness but from a superior clarity.
Legge
the name of this hexagram, may be represented in English by 'Inmost Sincerity.' It denotes the highest quality of man, and gives its possessor power so that he prevails with spiritual beings, with other men, and with the lower creatures. It is the p. 201 subject of the 'Doctrine of the Mean' from the 21st chapter onwards, where Remusat rendered it by 'la perfection,' 'la perfection morale,' and Intorcetta and his coadjutors by 'vera solidaque perfectio.' The lineal figure has suggested to the Chinese commentators, from the author of the first Appendix, two ideas in it which deserve to be pointed out. There are two divided lines in the centre and two undivided below them and above them. The divided lines in the centre are held to represent the heart or mind free from all pre-occupation, without any consciousness of self; and the undivided lines, on each side of it, in the centre of the constituent trigrams are held to denote the solidity of the virtue of one so free from selfishness. There is no unreality in it, not a single flaw.

ok, i decided to ask for additional insight Again, I asked for more clarity in "their" intentions towards us.
I received 51:2,5. Shock, which changes to 58 Joy. In keeping with my method of interpretation, I am reading changing line 5, which reads as follows:
Wilhelm:
Six in the fifth place means:
Shock goes hither and thither.
Danger.
However, nothing at all is lost.
Yet there are things to be done.
This is a case not of a single shock but of repeated shocks with no breathing
space between. Nonetheless, the shock causes no loss, because one takes care
to stay in the center of movement and in this way to be spared the fate of
being helplessly tossed hither and thither.
Legge
The fifth SIX, divided, shows its subject going and coming amidst the startling movements (of the time), and always in peril; but perhaps he will not incur loss, and find business (which he can accomplish).
which changes to 58 Joy
Wilhelm
The joyous mood is infectious and therefore brings success. But joy must be
based on steadfastness if it is not to degenerate into uncontrolled mirth.
Truth and strength must dwell in the heart, while gentleness reveals itself in
social intercourse. In this way one assumes the right attitude toward God and
man and achieves something. Under certain conditions, intimidation
without gentleness may achieve something momentarily, but not for all
time. When, on the other hand, the hearts of men are won by friendliness,
they are led to take all hardships upon themselves willingly, and if need be
will not shun death itself, so great is the power of joy over men.

Re: star nations / terrestrial beings... can someone help me with my interpretation
Tue, August 22, 2006 - 12:16 PMThat's an interesting throw. The answer is definately help us, according to your throw. ( i find it very difficult to imagine that anyone would come this far to exploit us, mycellf anyway)
The first line says stop, before you get humiliated. it is about a fox who is crossing a frozen river and not yet experienced enough to know his own weight and the noise of the ice to the point so he can judge these things properly, so he gets his tail wet. Humanity is in this position.
The second changing line, the fourth line of the hexagram changing, says it's going to be a long and difficult process, but success is possible.
The fifth line changing is one of my favorites in the whole book. If there is a line in the book to signify some sort of millinium of peace, this would be it.
58 fits perfectly with this!
Damn, i actually feel more hopeful about the situation after thinking about this.
Really a great throw.
I'm seriously a ching freak, and have been for over 30 years. I have to say, that willhelm and legge are my absolutely least favorite translations. these were the first translations into english (and german) and i like many newer translations much more.

Re: star nations / terrestrial beings... can someone help me with my interpretation
Tue, August 22, 2006 - 12:23 PMOh your second throw is what changes to joy.
The throw of shock changing to joy is very good for this scenario too! The first change saying that we are going to lose a lot, but will regain it in time. The second changing line says that there are great shocks, and there is a lot of work to do, but no real loss.
It's talking to you on this, IMO, and i like what it's saying.
